Candelight Vigil for Lawrence King
On February 28th, The Center in Hillcrest hosted a memorial and a silent candlelight walk to remember Lawrence King. While in class at his Oxnard middle school a week prior, Lawrence King was shot in the head by a fellow student because he was perceived to be gay. Memorials have been held all over the nation and even in Europe to "Remember Lawrence". Speakers at The Center's memorial included Christine Kehoe, Toni Atkins, Ernie McCray, Matt Stevens and students. Co-sponsors included GLSEN SD County, PFLAG San Diego County, the San Diego LGBT Center in Hillcrest, and Equality California. SMVP is currently seeking educators, school or program administrators, concerned parents, and youth to be a part of the Community Advisory Board for Youth Out Loud II which is currently in pre-production.
